The samples need to be collected by a medical doctor, nurse or lawyer who will be responsible for authenticating the samples and sending them to the laboratory for analysis. This is is normally used to determine the existence of a biological link between a child and his or her grandparents.

It is important to understand that a child shares 50% of their genes with their mother and 50% with their father.  Grandparents will only share around 25% of their genes with their grandchildren and thus, this test result cannot be as accurate as DNA paternity testing; Nevertheless, a grandparentage test can still provide a strong indication of the alleged familial relationship.

Y-STR Male Lineage DNA test is used to determine if two males share the same paternal lineage. The Y chromosome is inherited and passed exclusively down the male line. Since it has a relatively infrequent mutation rate, it will remain relatively unchanged for many generations.

The test will analyse the Y chromsome from each sample submitted and will generate a Y-STR profile for each person. The result are then compared; if the Y chromsome sequences of the people tested match it indicates that the tested parties share a paternal line.
