Palmerston North is the capital city of the Manawatu region of the North Island of New Zealand. It has a population of around 80,000 people, a large proportion of which is composed of students attending the nearby Massey University, Universal College of Learning and the International Pacific College. The city was named after the Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Britain, and the locals are called Palmerstonians. The city’s streets are arranged in a grid around the central park called The Square, which has an area of seven hectares. There are a number of other parks in the city including the Victoria Esplanade, which lies along the northern bank of the Manawatu River.
