How is a maternity test performed?

This test is performed in the same way as a paternity test. The test relies on the extraction of a 21 marker DNA profile from the mother and from the child. The DNA profiles of the mother and child are placed side by side and each genetic marker compared. In order to confirm the tested mother is the biological, all genetic markers would need to match.

The final result will confirm the maternity with a 99.99%+ probability of maternity, or alternatively exclude the female tested as being the biological mother with a 100% probability.

When would I need a maternity test?

There are various situations where a maternity DNA test may be required, most notably in the case of adoption where the adopted child wants to confirm relationship to their biological mother.

Maternity test kits

Maternity test kits are pre-packed for up to 3 test participants. Our kits contain the following:

4 swabs per person tested. The swabs for every person are found inside an envelope with a total of 3 envelopes (one envelope per test participant).

Sample submission forms. These forms are to be filled out by test participants or their parent/ legal guardian in the case of underage children and sent back with the DNA samples.

Instructions. The instructions provide a complete guide including any precautions when it comes to collecting samples. We have made our instructions clear and simple so that all our clients find the process stress-free and quick.

A self-addressed envelope. These envelopes are to be used to return your samples. They help make things convenient and quick as all you need is to affix a stamp and send them off

Legal and immigration maternity testing

This test is a peace of mind maternity test. If you need your results for a court case, you will need to choose a legal maternity test. The test for legal purposes follows a very different procedure to a peace of mind test. Click here for more information about legal testing.

Maternity testing can also be used for immigration purposes where results can be presented to immigration authorities as proof of relationship between mother and child.
